Pokhara Nursing Campus implements leadership development programme

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the Pokara Nursing Campus, Nepal, in collaboration with Gandaki Province Health Directorate Office has engaged its nursing students in a telenursing programme. 100 undergraduate and post-graduate nursing students were enrolled in this tele-programme which gave them the opportunity to assess isolating COVID-19 patients over the phone and provide much-needed comfort and advice.

Coronavirus has led to an increase in mental health issues such as fear, anxiety, depression, and a general decrease in overall wellbeing. During this time, the Tele-Nurses have been involved in counseling and referrals.

“A total of 27559 people have benefited so far from this service. We feel very proud to serve the communities through this telenursing programme […] We regularly discuss the tele-nursing programme during virtual meetings with the assigned students and created a platform to share experiences and discuss problems,” explained Sharada Sharma, programme lead.

“By being involved in this programme, we have developed leadership abilities as a result of continuous mentorship and many COVID-19 patients have been supported while isolating at home.  Too often we underestimate the power of a kind word, a listening ear, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. This experience gave us great job satisfaction and helped us to gain invaluable experience,” explained Kamala Neure and Krishma Puri, nursing students at the Pokhara Nursing Campus.
